Mali — War and the difficulty of accounting for its losses
THE ATTACK ON THE DIOURA MILITARY CAMP ON 10 SEPTEMBER CAUSED HEAVY LOSSES AMONG MALIAN FORCES. SOURCES CITED BY REUTERS PUT THE DEATH TOLL AT MORE THAN ONE HUNDRED. THE ARMY HAS ACKNOWLEDGED LOSSES WITHOUT PUBLISHING A COMPARABLE FIGURE, SO THE EXACT NUMBER CANNOT BE TREATED AS ESTABLISHED.

Dioura: the exact death toll has still not been published
JNIM attacked the Dioura camp on 10 September. The Malian army acknowledged losses and announced operations to evacuate personnel and strike the attackers. Two sources cited by Reuters put the death toll at more than one hundred. The Associated Press was unable independently to verify figures claimed by the armed group.
Military losses remain difficult to document
The war in Mali generates a profusion of statements, videos and partisan accounts. It produces far fewer consolidated public data on casualties. Operational secrecy is a military necessity. On its own, however, it does not explain the prolonged absence of sufficiently documented casualty figures for families and for society.
