L’Aventure ambiguë

Learning without forgetting?
Mérisphère — 6 October 2026
KEY REFERENCE1961

The novel places Samba Diallo at the heart of the encounter between the Diallobé, the new school and the Western experience.

Samba Diallo first receives the traditional education of the Diallobé before entering the “new school” and later continuing his studies in France. The two worlds gradually cease to be external to him: they become constitutive of his experience.

Samba Diallo’s path

DiallobéInitial education within the religious and cultural world of the Diallobé.
New schoolEntry into a body of knowledge made historically necessary by the world imposing itself on the Diallobé.
FranceFurther study and a deepening intellectual and existential transformation.
2013Kane recalls that, in his view, Samba’s death does not mean that every synthesis is impossible.

A question shifted by history

A contemporary rereading of the work renews the question by confronting it with the present: several generations of Africans have now attended the new school. The issue is no longer only what this knowledge does to the learner, but what the learner and African societies manage to do with that knowledge.

From knowledge to action

The question can now be asked in relation to the economy, the state, law, health, education, science, production and technology.
