Mérisphère — 6 October 2026
KEY REFERENCE1928–2026
A life spanning literature, senior administration and service to the Senegalese state.
Cheikh Hamidou Kane belongs to the generation of African intellectuals whose education unfolded at the junction between colonial rule and independence. His career combined study, senior administration, political responsibility and literary activity.
A body of work in two novels
| 2 April 1928 | Born in Matam, northern Senegal. |
| 1961 | Publication of Ambiguous Adventure, centred on Samba Diallo, the new school and the Western experience. |
| Public career | Served as a senior civil servant, governor and minister in independent Senegal. |
| 1995 | Publication of Guardians of the Temple, which shifts the inquiry towards the postcolonial state. |
| 3 October 2026 | Died in Dakar at the age of 98. |
From Samba Diallo to Salif Bâ
Ambiguous Adventure examines what new knowledge does to the person who acquires it. Guardians of the Temple shifts part of that inquiry towards institutions, power and public action.
A body of work beyond its brevity
Kane’s enduring relevance lies less in the number of his books than in the question they keep open: how can knowledge from elsewhere be received without surrendering the capacity to determine what one becomes?
