Cheikh Hamidou Kane and Chinua Achebe

Two experiences of transformation
Mérisphère — 6 October 2026
KEY REFERENCE1958–1995

Four characters make it possible to follow different moments of the colonial and postcolonial encounter: Okonkwo, Samba Diallo, Obi Okonkwo and Salif Bâ.

In Achebe, the world comes apart around the individual; in Kane, the fracture enters the individual. The works trace the transformation of societies as much as that of the people who pass through them.

Four figures

OkonkwoIn Things Fall Apart, he witnesses the disintegration of the world in which his identity had found its place.
Samba DialloIn Ambiguous Adventure, he carries within him two worlds that no longer coincide.
Obi OkonkwoIn No Longer at Ease, he returns from England to a transformed Nigeria; he too has changed.
Salif BâIn Guardians of the Temple, he tries to make knowledge acquired elsewhere act within local realities.

Two movements now joined

Okonkwo sees his world come apart. Samba Diallo carries within him two worlds that no longer coincide. Obi Okonkwo lives in what emerged from their collision. Salif Bâ tries to act within it.

Transformation of the world, transformation of the individual

The two bodies of work allow us to read together the transformation of the world around the individual and the transformation of the individual by the worlds through which he passes. Our present now brings the two together.
